Miloš Forman, Amadeus and Man on the Moon Director, Dead at 86

Czech filmmaker Milos Forman, whose American movies "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus" won a deluge of Academy Awards, including best director Oscars, died Saturday.

Hunting for locations, Forman realized Prague was the only European capital that had changed little since Mozart's time, but returning there initially filled him with dread.

In the 1960s, he joined the New Wave of filmmakers standing up to the Communist regime in what was then Czechoslovakia, making himself famous with "Black Peter", "Loves of a Blonde" and "The Firemen´s Ball".

His career overseas started with "Taking Off" in 1971, followed by "One Flew Over the Cuckoo´s Nest" four years later, which brought him his first ´best director´ Oscar. He also shot a film version, released internationally in 2009.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is one of only three films to win what are considered the five most important Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay (adapted, in this case); the other two are "It Happened One Night" and "The Silence of the Lambs".

"In his films you can see the author", he said.

German police: Muenster van driver acted alone
Muenster police president Hajo Kuhlisch said the man had four apartments and several cars, all of which were searched by police . What makes this story take a freakish turn is that the driver of the vehicle shot and killed himself inside it.

Forman, who became an American citizen in 1975, continued his success in 1979 with Hair, based on the popular hippie Broadway musical, and E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime (1981), set in New York City in the early 1900s.

Born in the Czech town of Caslav in 1932, he was raised as an orphan because both of this parents were killed in concentration camps during World War II.

He continued making films in Czechoslovakia before moving to the USA, with his first English-language feature being the comedy "Taking Off" in 1971.

"The People vs. Larry Flynt" (1996) starred Woody Harrelson as the Hustler publisher. The smash movie won eight Oscars out of 11 nominations. Two of them, twin sons named Jim and Andy, are named after Jim Carrey and Andy Kaufman; Forman directed Carrey in "Man on the Moon", a biopic about Kaufman.

Forman, who had travelled to the U.S. after Communist film authorities rejected his ideas, was also known for The People vs Larry Flynt (1996) and Man on the Moon (1999).

Married three times, Forman met his third wife Martina - a writer three decades his junior - in Prague in the 1990s.
