Donald Trump Calls FBI Raid On Michael Cohen "A Total Witch Hunt"

Donald Trump Calls FBI Raid On Michael Cohen

President Donald Trump is fuming about abuse of attorney-client privilege after federal agents raised his personal attorney's office in NY.

On Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted this: "Attorney-client privilege is dead!"

Anyway, just because we've lost faith in Trump doesn't mean we are going into the business of aiding and abetting his enemies when they attack him groundlessly. The seized records also included communications between Trump and Cohen, which would likely require a review to protect attorney-client conversations, the Times reported.

Monday's raid on Cohen's Manhattan office is said to have been ordered by special counsel Robert Mueller, and could spell serious trouble for Trump. "We do know this is a very serious step when law enforcement raids an attorney's office". The payment was made just days before the 2016 presidential election. Trump told reporters last week that he did not know about the payment.

"We have been in contact with federal authorities regarding their execution of a warrant relating to Mr. Cohen". He would have had to have very specific evidence showing that Cohen had committed a crime or crimes, and he would have to present that evidence in detail to all concerned: to Rosentstein, to the Criminal Division, to the USA attorney's office, and to the judge who ultimately issued the warrant.

The Monday raids included the Loew's Regency hotel where Cohen has been staying.

Everybody just knows he's just mentally challenged. 'He speaks to himself, usually he has an orange Bible or a rosary in his hand. NYPD refused to answer if officers warned Vassell before firing, and none of the officers involved wore body cameras.

Independent journalist and MAGA cheerleader Mike Cernovich, for one, was unconvinced, seizing on news that South District U.S. Attorney Geoff Berman, a Trump appointee, had recused himself from the investigation. If communications typically covered by attorney-client privilege are deemed to be "in furtherance of a current or a planned crime or fraud" then the privilege does not apply. Cohen did not make a public statement in response to Trump's comment. Some pundits believe Mueller's firing is now inevitable and only a matter of time - and timing. Meanwhile, The Times said the raid did not appear to be directly connected to Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 United States election, but that the information he provided was most likely uncovered as part of it.

The payment made by Cohen to Daniels has been characterized by political watchdog groups as a violation of campaign finance law, and Monday's raid could produce information that could calcify that argument, which could then lead to more legal problems for the president beyond what Mueller's investigation ultimately generates.

There have been few signs that Mueller was interested in investigating the payment, though. Trump has obviously wanted to fire Robert Mueller from the beginning, but his aides and lawyers have convinced him that it would precipitate a constitutional crisis.

"This could be primarily about Stormy Daniels", he said. The tightened scrutiny on Trump's allies has angered the president, who has sought to dodge questions of misconduct since entering the White House.

Put more bluntly, prosecutors might have feared that attorney Michael Cohen would hide, or even destroy, incriminating evidence if they did not seize it first, said Martin Healy, chief counsel for the Massachusetts Bar Association. Daniels claims she had an affair with the president in 2006, which the White House has denied. Cohen is something much more: a fixer, a deal-maker, a wartime consigliere. The timing of the payout - so close to the 2016 election - was purely coincidental, Cohen has said.
