White House says North Korea is willing to talk denuclearization

The North Koreans are pushing to have the meeting in their capital, Pyongyang, the sources said, although it is unclear whether the White House would be willing to hold the talks there.

"For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility".

Beyond dealing with the North Koreans through the channel that runs between the CIA and the Reconnaissance General Burea, Pompeo has also been in close touch with the director of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, Suh Hoon, who was the individual who brokered Kim's invitation to Trump, the Times said.

But Pyongyang has been silent publicly since then about a summit, even as Kim visited Beijing earlier this month in his first visit outside North Korea since assuming control of the country after his father, Kim Jong-il, died in 2011.

The back-channel talks are the latest move in a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at resolving the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula.

She said the U.S.is deeply concerned about the state of North Korean citizens' well-being.

Talks between the two leaders are supposed to take place by May, but a time and place have yet to be decided.

"It's a natural step in the right direction".

American and North Korean officials have spoken several times and have met in a third country to settle on the summit's location, administration officials say - with Kim pushing for a Pyongyang meeting and the USA looking for a neutral site like Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The representatives of the US and North Korea have already met in a third country.

She added, "But we're going into this very cautiously, very much knowing that he's looked at the Iran deal, he's seen what he can get and he's seen how he can push through loopholes, and we're not going to let that happen again".

Officials said a date for the summit will be set, after a location is agreed upon.

The meeting on Saturday (April 7) at the North Korean side of the border village of Panmunjom was attended by three working-level officials from the South and their three to four counterparts from the North, according to Seoul officials.
