Philip, husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, admitted to hospital for hip surgery

Prince Philip has been admitted to a London hospital to have surgery on his hip.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has been admitted to King Edward VII Hospital for a planned hip surgery, a royal spokesperson of the Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Tuesday.

The health scare comes at a busy time for the royal family.

His Royal Highness, who has been married to Queen Elizabeth II for 70 years, did not attend Easter services with his wife at Windsor Castle on Sunday, April 1.

Details of the duke's condition, or which joint is causing the issue, have not been released by Buckingham Palace but the late Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations in the 1990s, first when aged 95 then later when she was 97.

At that point, the two separated and it wasn't long before Mandela sacked Winnie from his cabinet and filed for divorce. They had two children together, Zindzi Mandela-Hlongwane (born 1958) and Zenani Mandela-Dlamini (born 1960).

At the time the Queen's consort was said to be experiencing some trouble with the joint. He was absent from the Easter Mattins Service at St George's Chapel where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will Wednesday in May. Five days earlier he backed out of the Royal Maundy Service at St. George's chapel.

"One of the reasons that Prince Harry has wanted this wedding to happen quite quickly - this is really whirlwind by royal standards - is because his 96-year-old grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, is retired now and Prince Harry really wants him to be at his wedding", Nicholl said.

The Duke stepped down from his public duties last summer but on occasions does still attend events with the Queen.
