Pulse Gunman's Widow Noor Salman Acquitted Of Charges Related To Shooting

Her husband, Omar Mateen, died during a shootout with police after he had entered the club and killed 49 people and injured 58.

A guilty verdict would have meant a lifetime behind bars for Salman.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said he shared the disappointment of the victims' families.

Prosecutors said that Salman, 31, helped her husband, even if she didn't pull the actual trigger that night.

"Her only sin is she married a monster", defense attorney Linda Moreno told jurors.

"This was really her opportunity to clear her name and move on with her life", her spokeswoman Susan Clary told reporters, adding that Salman will now move to California, where she has relatives. The case against her mainly consisted of a so-called confession she made to the police after intense questioning for over 17 hours.

Fellow defense attorney Charles Swift agreed that tending to her son will be Salman's first and foremost priority.

Noor Salman is charged with obstruction and providing material support to a terrorist organization. When asked what the future looks like for Salman, her attorney Fritz Scheller replied, "She's going to be a mother". The FBI had obtained Salman's admission of guilt after 11 hours of interrogating her, without an attorney present, and had neglected to record that interrogation, leaving them with no audio or video of her confession - much of which was not written by Salman but merely initialed by her. Salman's lawyer, Linda Moreno, drew on these facts in making case that numerous words in that alleged confession had been "planted" by the FBI - including those that suggested Salman had scouted the Pulse nightclub with her husband.

Salman's family, though, said she was innocent of the charges she faced and sending her to prison would have only created another victim. She said in an interview with the New York Times in November 2016 she was unaware of her husband's plan, and she herself was a victim of his physical abuse.

Meanwhile, other evidence was conflicting including credit charges that the couple ran upwards of $30,000 and Salman being named as Mateen's death beneficiary.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Ricardo Enriquez testified that Salman said in several statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation that Mateen watched jihadi beheading videos, purchased a rifle and ammunition and went to a gun range to practice.

Outside the courthouse, Salman's uncle, Al Salman thanked his niece's attorney and said, "Happy Friday". In the statement, Salman said over "the last two years, Omar talked to me about jihad".

"Nothing harmful would come out of her", a friend of Salman's who was identified only as Ms. Ahmed told jurors, according to CNN affiliate WKGM.

But defense attorneys said those statements were coerced, and there was no audio or video tape of the interrogation.

The revelation threatened to upend the case against Salman, but the judge denied the motion, saying it was not relevant. Authorities had questioned her for 11 hours.

While that piece of the statement has been disproved, prosecutors stressed they used electronic evidence to prove other points were correct, including Mateen's obsession with ISIS.

Seddique Mateen had been on the prosecution's witness list but was not called to testify in the trial.
