Oklahoma teachers say pay raise isn't enough, still plan to hold walkout

Oklahoma teachers say pay raise isn't enough, still plan to hold walkout

Oklahoma secondary school teachers had an annual mean wage of $42,460 as of May 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lawmakers have left funding on the table that could be used immediately to help Oklahoma students.

Oklahoma Education Association President Alicia Priest accused both chambers of the Oklahoma Legislature of taking actions Thursday to "derail almost $75 million in revenue necessary to fund House Bill 1010xx". The union has demanded a $10,000 pay raise for teachers over three years, $5,000 for support personnel and a $75 million increase in funding, and the package approved by the House would not be enough to satisfy all of their demands.

After a teacher pay raise measure was passed by both chambers and landed on the governor's desk, several school districts began taking a closer look at the scheduled teacher walkout.

She added: "The goal of Oklahoma educators has always been to avoid a walk out, because lawmakers continue breaking promises, even promises made less than 24 hours ago, we call on schools to remain closed on Monday so educators can send a clear message at the Capitol: Oklahoma educators won't stand for these games any longer".

Teachers in Oklahoma are planning to hold a state-wide walkout on Monday, saying a pay raise passed by the state isn't enough.

The state government has cut education spending by 28.2 percent since the financial crash of 2008-the biggest funding cuts in the country.

When adjusted for inflation, the center's report shows a almost 28 percent reduction over the past 10 years. Teachers in NY, the top-ranked state in terms of teacher pay, made $79,152 on average in 2016.

The color red was meant to convey their frustration, which they say has reached a crisis level. This movement, fueled by the courageous acts of teachers, parents, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, custodians, and community members has forced this legislature to finally act. The rally drew about 2,500 people, the Arizona Department of Public Safety told CNN affiliate KNXV.

The teachers are fighting not just for their own salaries, but for boosts to the whole public education system. "We have among the highest class sizes and school counselor loads in the nation, making it hard to meet the individual needs of our students", the group stated. "But the kids who have come behind me, they only have a Spanish teacher on Skype, and after two years they still really only know simple words like colors and numbers". They're hoping their very public display of frustration will pressure state leaders, such as Gov. Doug Ducey.
