Australia trio sent home after ball-tampering scandal, coach stays

Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland said Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were facing "significant sanctions" and would be sent home today in his first official announcement since an investigation was launched into the ball-tampering saga.

Warner, one of the alleged ringleaders of the plot to change the condition of the ball during the third Test against South Africa, was seen drinking champagne in a hotel bar in Cape Town, leaving teammates "outraged".

Bancroft used a strip of yellow sticky tape he'd covered with dirt granules to illegally scratch the rough side of the ball, thereby facilitating more swing for bowlers.

"The players involved have officially been reported for breaching Australian cricket's code of conduct. This is not a good day for Australian cricket".

"I want to apologise to Cricket South Africa and the South African fans that this issue has overshadowed what should have been a wonderful series".

Australia's David Warner, is seated on the team bus after the arrival of the Australian team to OR Tambo International International airport in Johannesburg. James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said Lehmann would remain under contract and had not resigned his post. Darren Lehmann the coach was not in the knowhow and will continue as the coach of the team.

Australian national team cricket coach Darren Lehmann will not resign.

Before that, Sehrai had given a miss to executive council meetings of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and the Hurriyat as well. He was one of the accused in the Kashmir terror funding case.

Smith and Warner have been stripped of their leadership positions and all three will now leave the tour in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal, which has shaken the sport and cut to the quick Australia's "play hard but fair" psyche.

"To (o) many reputations on the line for the full story not to come out".

"I think it's an issue of great proportion because of the standing of cricket in the eyes of the Australian public and, not only that, the Australian cricket team and I think that response is not terribly surprising", Sutherland said.

"The behaviour of some of the players in the current South Africa/Australia series, and other incidents in recent times in the game we all cherish, has fallen well below the standard required to inspire future generations of cricket-loving families", the MCC said.

Mr Sutherland said that an internal investigation, which is being helped by two International Cricket Council integrity officers, will be completed in the next 24 hours.

But asked on three occasions whether the trio had cheated, Sutherland responded: "In the laws of the game, this is not in the spirit of the game". "The Prime Minister's comments are one of only hundreds and thousands and millions of Australian views and opinions, and we need to make decisions that are in the best interests of the game". Wicketkeeper Tim Paine, who led the team on the fourth day of the Newlands Test after Smith and Warner were stood down as captain and vice-captain, becomes the Test team's 46th leader but his further tenure will depend on the sanctions handed to Smith and Warner.

Sutherland further informed that Matthew Renshaw, Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell will replace the three players charged in the Test squad.
