Ex-State Dept. official discuss US-N.Korea summit

The South Korea Unification Ministry said the North had responded to an inquiry made through the Panmunjeom communications channel and would be sending a delegation led by Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country.

North Korea broke its silence March 21, 2018, on its surprise peace overtures, including a tentative summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, while denying that USA pressure led to the breakthrough.

South Korea's three-member delegation will be led by Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon.

North Korea's deputy director general for North American affairs Choe Kang Il is now in Finland, holding talks with South Korean and USA delegations for what the Finnish foreign minister Timo Soini described as a "1.5 track meeting with academics and officials with Finland only a facilitator".

This year's start delay was due to the Winter Olympics being held in South Korea.

The Finnish foreign ministry said Wednesday that the tripartite talks were held in a positive atmosphere and aimed at "building confidence and reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula". The summit also comes ahead of the face-to-face meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the North's Kim that is expected to take place by the end of May to work out a deal to end the North's nuclear weapons' deal. Economic sanctions too have shown a huge impact on the Kim regime' behaviour, with even China, a close friend of North Korea, announcing on February 18 the suspension of coal imports from the DPRK.

As diplomats scurry to arrange the North-South talks as well as the proposed Trump-Kim meeting, the North's silence has raised concerns over its intentions. But there had been no official word from Pyongyang.

North Korean state media have not yet directly mentioned the summits.

The planned summit between Moon and Kim will be preceded by performances of South Korean pop singers in Pyongyang on April 1, followed by a joint performance with North Korean artists on April 3.
