Xi Jinping reelected Chinese president

Xi is the first president to take the oath of office, which commits him "to work for a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and handsome".

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Xi Jinping on his re-election as the President of the People's Republic of China.

Xi's close ally, Wang Qishan, became his deputy, with 2,969 delegate votes in favor and one against.

This effectively paved the way for Xi the country's most powerful leader since the founder of communist China, Mao Zedong to rule indefinitely.

"Xi will be chairman of everything", Ether Yin, a partner at advisory firm Trivium China in Beijing, told Bloomberg.

Moments before, the congress unanimously reappointed Mr. Xi to the state presidency, the least powerful of his several titles, and as chairman of a state military commission.

His election marks a formal return of the 69-year-old to the centre stage of Chinese politics.

The Health Ministry in Gaza also reported three wounded in clashes by the border with Israel , one severely and two moderately. Two additional wounded from live fire were taken to a hospital in Slafit south. the ministry said.

Xi and Wang spoke only to pledge allegiance to the constitution, with Wang giving the podium an emphatic tap after he finished.

Wang's appointment is crucial for "rising China" as he can help Xi deal with increasingly frayed relations with the Trump-led United States amid fears of a trade war.

The vote was largely a formality after the legislature last Sunday lifted presidential term limits. He also has an extensive network of influential global contacts and forged enduring ties with major Wall Street figures such as Hank Paulson.

Wang stepped down from his senior position in the Communist Party as head of an anti-corruption watchdog last October after reaching the age of 68, a customary age for high-ranking Chinese officials to go into retirement.

Wang, once the party's formidable anti-graft chief who has mostly worked behind the scenes, read out his oath in a gravelly voice, slowly but confidently.

Moments after the vote, the People's Daily newspaper proclaimed Xi as China's "great helmsman" in an alert sent to millions of mobile phones. A new supervision law, set to be approved Tuesday, will broaden his campaign against corruption beyond party members to include all public-sector workers. He is expected to exercise a large influence on economic and foreign policies.
