Peyton Manning Sells Papa John's Restaurants

Last week, Pizza Hut announced it would be the new pizza sponsor of the NFL.

The NFL's official sponsor since 2010, Papa John's likely did not endear itself to the league when founder John Schnatter a year ago blamed the company's decline in sales on a protest by NFL players who kneeled during the national anthem. Papa John's ended its National Football League sponsorship in February.

Peyton Manning is distancing himself from Papa John's. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company distanced itself from the group, saying that it did not want them to buy their pizza.

"NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's shareholders", Schnatter said in a November earnings call with analysts. That was probably unsurprising; Papa John's was weirdly outspoken about ensuring players stand for the anthem, and Jerry Jones is also weirdly connected to the company, meaning his current animosity towards the league made any partnership unlikely going forward. He won two championship rings - one with the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI and another with the Denver Broncos during his final season in Super Bowl 50.

About 6.5 million schoolchildren took part in voting among three short-listed designs with their classes casting a single vote. The mascots will be featured at various events and on products related to the games.

Manning sold the 31 locations to Mike Pierce Jr., who told The Denver Post he wasn't concerned about Papa John's suddenly shaky standing with the powerful sports entity.

"We know our potential is so much greater than our results, and we are taking significant steps to reinvigorate our record of profitable growth and value creation", Steve Ritchie, CEO and president, said in a statement at the time.

According to Collins, Manning sold his stake to an existing franchisee who owned locations in various markets. "Actions are underway to improve our brand proposition, how we connect with customers, and how we operate at the unit level".
