US Students Question Arming Staff After Teacher Fires Gun In Classroom

No one was injured in the Dalton school shooting, but one student hurt an ankle as she ran, police said.

Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said the teacher was taken into custody after a 30- to 45-minute standoff with officers Thursday morning (AEDT).

You can see the boarded up window where Dalton police say Davidson fired a single shot out the window and then barricaded himself in the classroom.

Police didn't immediately say why Davidson fired the gun, but noted that he aimed away from anyone into an exterior window as the principal tried to unlock the classroom door. The incident came to light at 11.30 am on Wednesday when students tried to enter Davidson's class but he shut the door closed and asked them to stay away.

Channel 3 was able to walk through Dalton High School Thursday, just 24 hours after teacher Randal Davidson allegedly fired a shot and prompted the evacuation of the almost 2,000 students that attend the school.

"I put my key in the door".

Davidson faces six charges including making terroristic threats and acts and aggravated assault involving a gun, as the weapon was sacked out of a window in the direction of homes.

So, 11Alive went to the school on Thursday to find out how much they knew about Davidson's mental state.

Cason commended the work of the school resource officer, who he said convinced Davidson to surrender to authorities, as well as the school for their response to the situation.

No children were in danger, Dalton Police said.

The incident is sparking debate about President Trump's proposal that some teachers start carrying concealed weapons, to defend students against school shooters.

In its report of the Georgia incident, CNN pointed out that critics say arming teachers could create a host of other unsafe side effects.

Chastain said in an interview that Davidson himself had commented that arming teachers was a bad idea. He was also a play-by-play announcer for the high school football team.

Channel 3 got a first look at that classroom on Friday.

Dalton teacher accused of firing a handgun in his classroom had three rifles taken away after setting the family auto ablaze at his home two years ago, according to a sheriff's report obtained Friday by The Associated Press. "I tripped over a chair on my way out and thought I would be trampled, but someone helped me up", she said, according to the LA Times.

According to police, a note was found on the floor of a classroom on February 21st, that indicated a threat to the school, though they do not believe Wednesday's incident was related to that note in any way.
