Olympics: Japan's Olympians share Pyeongchang experiences with fans

The winning designs were submitted by Ryo Taniguchi, who was shocked about the win.

A total of 205,755 classes from 16,769 elementary schools, including global schools and Japanese schools overseas, participated in the selection process.

The Olympic mascot, with a futuristic blue and white chequered pattern, has been described as having a special power that allows it to move anywhere instantly.

With luxurious manes, short horns and faces that appear to be shaped like rugby balls, mascots "Ren" and "G" are inspired by "shishi", the mythical lion-like figure that features in Japan's new year celebrations and kabuki theatre.

"It has strong sense of justice, and is very athletic", an organiser said.

"It has a dignified inner strength and a kind heart that loves nature."

Taniguchi's design received 109,041 votes, while the two other finalists secured 61,423 and 35,291 votes, respectively.

Canada's Kevin Drury didn't finish the final, which followed a competition which had been marred by a series of heavy slams. Christopher Del Bosco, 35, took off on a jump and lost control in mid-air late in the run.

The Paralympic mascot, a predominantly blue and green figure whose head was covered with leaves to represent Brazil's rich vegetation, was named Tom after musician Tom Jobim.

The mascots will be featured at various events and on products related to the games.

Yoshiko Ikoma, deputy chief of the mascot panel and designer, said narrowing down the designs for students to vote on was a heated process. He said that he was just so spaced out when the winning mascots were unveiled.

About 6.5 million schoolchildren took part in voting among three short-listed designs with their classes casting a single vote.

The pot-bellied, red-cheeked bear known as Kumamon - created in 2010 to promote Japan's southern Kumamoto region - raked in $8.8 million previous year for local businesses selling branded products.

"I'd like to support the athletes (during the Tokyo 2020 Games) as a volunteer", she added. Tokyo will host the Olympics for a second time after it did so in 1964.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will begin on July 24 and end on August 9, 2020.
