Kayvon Webster welcomes Marcus Peters to the Rams on Twitter

Including the fifth-year team option, Peters still has two years left on his very affordable rookie contract.

Details of the trade, which won't be processed until the start of the new league year on March 14, have yet to be disclosed.

According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs will receive a "package" of draft picks for Peters. Since Peters entered the NFL in 2015, no player has more interceptions (19) or passes defensed (55), per NFL Research. According to media scuttlebutt, the Chiefs had grown exhausted of Peters's proclivity for generating headlines for reasons other than his talent on the football field.

Adding Peters gives the Rams assurance in the secondary.

New Zealand have lost their last two games and will be looking for a reversal in form to clinch the series. Taylor and Ish Sodhi combined for a 38-run partnership but it was too late to revive the innings.

Kansas City already has picked up former Raiders cornerback David Amerson for the 2018 season, and he will likely be penciled in as a starter now. Johnson played the past two seasons on the Rams' franchise tag, and he could command a record-setting deal. He was fined for throwing a penalty flag into the stands last season as he was storming off the field in anger.

But, as with the Alex Smith trade, there are also some good reasons for the Chiefs to get rid of Peters.

The move, like the Washington Redskins' trade of Kendall Fuller, was met with swift criticism from Chiefs fans, and rightfully so. Obviously the Chiefs feel comfortable enough with Fuller at corner that they can cut bait with Peters. Instead, Peters is going to the division rival Rams, which means Trumaine Johnson is poised to hit the open market.

Despite the Chiefs' request, the Rams will only be sending draft picks.
