94 schoolgirls missing after Boko Haram attacked Yobe school hostel

Some 815 out of the 926 students were physically seen in the Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, as on Tuesday, Abdulmaliki Sumonu, police chief in charge of the state told reporters in state capital Damaturu, reported Xinhua.

The state shares a border with Borno, which is home to the massive Sambisa forest that the Chibok girls were said to have been kept for years after their abduction.

"I saw girls crying and wailing in three Tata vehicles and they were crying for help", said a witness from the village of Gumsa who was reportedly forced to direct the insurgents out of the area.

Anxious parents and guardians converged on the school on Wednesday to demand answers, with conflicting figures as to how many girls were missing.

Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education and co - convener of Bring Back Our Girls Movement, has called out the Federal Government over its silence on the alleged abduction of 94 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Science and Technical Secondary School in Dapchi town, Yobe state.

Locals initially said the girls and their teachers fled.

"Many students cannot be accounted for till this moment, some classes are empty, some classes had less than 15 students; some said ten could not be accounted for; mostly all of the classes have missing students".

Mohammed Alamin, the commissioner for Education for Yobe State, described how some of the terrified students jumped over walls to flee the militants who turned up at their school with trucks, in a eerie echo of the Chibok girls abduction almost four years ago.

This is as a result of the attack on the school by Boko Haram.

But the police chief warned that the public should not take this to mean that they were kidnapped.

Boko Haram has seized thousands of women and young girls, as well as men and boys of fighting age during the conflict, which has left at least 20,000 dead since 2009.

Boko Haram kidnapped almost 300 girls from a school in Chibok in April 2014, setting off global outrage.

Getting accurate information from the remote northeast remains hard. The information so far received is that the principal of the school had dispersed the students on hearing sporadic shooting before the insurgents arrived the school premises.

The attack in Dapchi will again raise questions about the government's grip on security.
