Microsoft ends notifications for Win-Phone 7.5 and 8.0

Microsoft ends notifications for Win-Phone 7.5 and 8.0

Once the support ends, a device running on these versions of the Windows operating systems would no longer receive notifications and additional live tile updates.

Microsoft says that Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile users will not be affected by this change, as push notifications for those platforms will remain on for the time being.

Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 were released in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

According to the announcement, the company has spared the device running Windows 8.1 and 10 mobile. In a series of tweets, Joe Belfiore, the company's corporate vice president in the operating system group system clearly confirmed that no Windows Phone will be upgraded with new features.

High winds force more event postponements at Winter Olympics
The postponements will compress the schedule for Alpine skiing, which has 10 events remaining, into just 10 days. The committee will also offer refunds to those who are unable to attend the rescheduled competition.

Starting tomorrow, February 20, Microsoft will discontinue notification services for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 (via The Verge).

"Once this happens: Your phone will no longer receive notifications". This basically means that the surface phone presentation could take place officially even before the rumored dates that are 'towards the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019'.

If you're one of the few using the more recent Windows Phone 8.1, which dropped in 2014, Microsoft writes that everything will still work as usual "at this time". Microsoft's last and latest mobile operating system Windows 10 Mobile is still kicking, but the platform is already in maintenance mode, and the extended support for the operating system will come to an end in mid-2019.

Hope may still spring, though: Rumor is that Microsoft is working on a new, foldable tablet device that could also function as a smartphone.
