Sweden's Kalla wins first gold medal of Pyeongchang Olympics

President Thomas Bach presented Sweden's Charlotte Kalla with the first gold medal of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 at the Medals Plaza on Saturday night. Kalla prevailed by 7.8 seconds in the 15-kilometre race in Pyeongchang on Saturday, marking the third time she has topped the podium at an Olympics. The medal was her 11th career Olympic medal, most ever by a female Winter Olympian.

In a day when the spotlight was on the unified Korean hockey team, Norwegian Marit Bjørgen collected a record 11th medal. Visitors can also snap a selfie at the circle of national flagpoles, have a bite to eat at the Spectators' Cafeteria and visit the Partner showcasing.

She also has six Olympic medals over to her name, equalling Alpine skier Anja Pärson for the most among Swedish women at the Winter Games. "It is my fifth Olympics and still to be there, I am happy with that".

2010 and 2014 victor Bjoergen had to settle for silver, 7.8 seconds behind, taking a women's record 11th medal overall, six of them gold. "I am happy to be here at my age".

Meanwhile, Germany's Laura Dahlmeier, 24, won her first gold medal in biathlon, taking the women's 7.5km sprint, ahead of Norway's Marte Olsbu in second place and Veronika Vitkova from the Czech Republic in third.

"[It means] a lot", Kalla said of her victory.

In one of the most physically testing events in the Olympics, Kalla broke away from the pack after about 34 minutes.

Her collection includes three gold medals from Vancouver 2010 and three from Sochi 2014.
