Human Rights Legend Asma Jahangir Dies At 66

Asma Jahangir died of cardiac arrest in Lahore on Sunday at the age of 66.

Chairman National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) Justice (Retd.) Ali Nawaz Chowhan Monday expressed deep sorrow and grief over the sudden demise of renowned lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jehangir.

The funeral prayers were led by Haider Farooq Mududi, and in which government officials, large number of lawyers, judges, celebrities and citizens participated.

"The death of Asma Jahangir is a tragic loss for the entire human rights and press freedom movement", RSF deputy director-general Antoine Bernard said. In 1987, she co-founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and became its Secretary General until 1993 when she was elevated as commission's chairperson.

As a lawyer in Pakistan, Ms. Jahangir was the first woman admitted to the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Council and was the first female President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. She provided leadership for several Asian human rights organisations as well as for the International Federation for Human Rights; and contributed to United Nations panels inquiring into Sri Lankan human rights violations and a fact-finding mission on Israeli settlements.

She also institutionalised her work for human rights. "She will be remembered throughout the journey towards stronger women rights in Pakistan", Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said. Her auto was smashed as she attempted to leave the court. But while her voice was appreciated by liberals who believed that the only way Pakistan's civil society could progress was to improve its human rights record, she had powerful detractors who opposed her actions on the grounds that she was destroying the country's traditional political and social fabric.

Earlier today, Asma's body was shifted to her house in Gulberg from the hospital where it was placed in a morgue.

Chelsea bomber Ahmad Rahimi sentenced to life in prison
Late past year , Rahimi began trying to radicalize prisoners at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, prosecutors say. While imprisoned, Rahimi has completed classes in business, entrepreneurship and drama, Donaldson wrote.

Asma was born in Pakistan's Lahore city.

Jahangir faced death threats, beatings and imprisonment to win landmark human rights cases while standing up to dictators.

"I remember her profound articulations on several occasions at the United Nations fora about the human rights violations and persecutions against religious minorities in different parts of the world, especially misuse of the blasphemy law in Pakistan", he said.

Prime Minister Abbasi expressed sadness over her death and praised her role to upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights. "For all of us defenders of human rights in Iran, she was a companion in the struggle for a more just, free and equal Iran".

Jahangir also received several awards, including the 2014 Right Livelihood Award, 2010 Freedom Award, Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2010 and Sitara-e-Imtiaz, UNESCO/Bilbao Prize for the Promotion of a Culture of Human Rights in 2010 and an Officier de la Légion d'honneur by France in 2014.

She is survived by her husband, two daughters and a son. The funeral would take place after Sulema's return to Pakistan, the family announced.
