English Premier League outspends Europe's top five leagues in January transfer window

English Premier League outspends Europe's top five leagues in January transfer window

Premier League clubs spent 430 million pounds ($612 million) in the January transfer window to shatter the previous mark of 225 million set in 2011, said a report by the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

Bournemouth were the only club not to spend a penny on additions this month, with the other 19 spending a combined £430m - nearly double the previous record of £225m.

The £57m Manchester City paid for Aymeric Laporte was also a club record.

La Repubblica reported that the Italian Serie A reached a net spend of R296 million while the Spanish Primera League came close to the English top-flight due to Phillipe Coutinho's R2,37 billion transfer to Barcelona.

Alexis Sanchez swapped Arsenal for Manchester United as one of the window's most-talked-about deals went through on 22 January, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way - although Deloitte have not included any fees from this deal in their total for January.

And the Gunners didn't stop there, with the deadline day arrival of superstar striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £56m from Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United players reportedly unhappy over Alexis Sanchez's deal
Manchester United have only won more league games against Aston Villa (85) and Arsenal (82) than they have against Tottenham (80). And on his new contract with United, the former Chelsea boss said: "The club wants the same as I want, it's as simple as that".

Spending records in transfer windows appear to be getting broken all the time and this season has proved no different.

"While another record-breaking season catches the eye, Premier League clubs' expenditure continues to be well within their means in the context of revenue generated", said Dan Jones, partner in the company's Sports Business Group.

Premier League football clubs have spent a huge £1.9bn on players in the 2017/18 season - a 35% rise on last season, the latest data from Deloitte shows.

Not surprisingly, the Premier League was again the highest-spending league in European football during the January window.

Recent January windows have seen the Premier League's bottom six clubs contribute the majority of gross expenditure, as they invest in an attempt to ensure survival.

"International trade has flourished, with the highest ever January gross overseas outlay in Premier League history at £260m and the highest amount of January receipts from abroad at £185m, with names such as Coutinho and Costa leaving the United Kingdom and Laporte and Aubameyang arriving from abroad".
