Edmund: I can win Australian Open

Edmund: I can win Australian Open

Kyle Edmund reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final to offer British tennis genuine hope in life beyond Andy Murray after another hard-fought win at the Australian Open. However, the 16-time grand slam champion advanced to the last eight in Melbourne for a 10th time.

Edmund was clocking up the aces to hold comfortably and Seppi's metronomic groundstrokes were deserting him, but all under major pressure from his opponent, who was cracking the ball deep off both flanks.

But the Brit produced a superb, sustained burst of controlled aggression and fantastic serving to clinch a truly special win. Including, one suspects, a still jet-lagged Murray.

But he did so calmly and impressively, before digging himself out of a 0/30 hole in his next service game in similar fashion.

Martic took a medical timeout to receive treatment from a trainer for a hip or upper thigh complaint after the fifth game of the second set.

Elise Mertens extended her winning streak to nine matches with a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over Petra Martic, reaching the quarterfinals in her first appearance in the Australian Open main draw. Edmund was understandably anxious, and coughed up no fewer than 23 errors in the first set, more than half his total for the match.

He saved all seven break points he faced in the final set - 15 of 18 in the match - then broke Schwartzman's serve in the final game, clinching it on his third match point.

Despite all Edmund's gifts, the match was an awkward assignment. Then he cancelled the apparently inevitable tiebreak by breaking Seppi again.

The comedy is produced by Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine banner and is the first scripted comedy that Apple has picked up. Part of the reason for the bump could be Witherspoon's recent role in an TV show produced by Apple .

He was a set and a break down - as he had been in his four-hour, five-setter against the 2017 US Open finalist in the first round - and there is a sense that his youthful strength could carry him even deeper in this tournament.

Now it was Seppi making mistakes and Edmund holding serve with ruthless authority.

It turned out to be never. Edged in the tie-break thanks to two mini-breaks, Edmund did not allow his head to drop - he was broken early in the second and hit back straight away, breaking at the end of the set to level up.

The Italian stood firm, though, and did so again in the sixth game despite being unhappy that a foot fault call had given the Brit the second of two opportunities. Edmund then served out the match easily, clinching victory with another unreturnable serve.

"Every time I step on the court, I believe I'm going to win", said Edmund. "I feel I have a good ability to control matches and the outcome of matches".

One of those opponents was Rafael Nadal, who Edmund took a set off in Monte Carlo past year - the only set the world number one lost in the whole tournament.

Next up, in uncharted territory, will be the victor of the upcoming blockbuster of Nick Kyrgios against Grigor Dimitrov.
