Briefing reporters after returning from a UN Security Council visit to Afghanistan, she said the Afghanistan government has asked the 15-member powerful wing of the world body to step up pressure on Pakistan.

This is the strongest attack that has come from the U.S. president.

Despite having fought the Taliban in the 1979-89 Afghanistan war in the Soviet era, Moscow now advocates engagement because the militant group it not considered to have ambitions beyond Afghanistan, in contrast to Daesh.

The statement also said Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would be heading to New York Wednesday for two days to participate in two high-level sessions: "Non-Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction: build confidence-building measures" and "Building regional partnerships in Afghanistan and Central Asia as a model of the interdependence of security and development".

The official declined to say who initiated the mid-testimony phone call or who took part on behalf of the White House. That subpoena will remain in effect when Bannon comes back before the committee for more questioning, members said.

The remarks by Ambassador Nikki Haley at the United Nations in New York City on January 17 came amid reports that Taliban negotiators held exploratory talks on resuming peace negotiations during a visit to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, this week. Wells said the United States wanted that the continuing presence of the Haqqani network and other terrorist groups within Pakistan's territory must be adequately addressed. "We will also fight the terrorists who are standing against Pakistan".

The UN visit to Kabul came as a delegation of Taliban negotiators based in Qatar visited Islamabad to discuss restarting peace negotiations, media reported on January 17.

The Taliban group spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid had earlier rejected the participation of the group's representatives in the unofficial talks that took place in Turkey.

Russian Federation called on Wednesday for urgent talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, its Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
