Pope Francis begins Chile visit

Francis is so attuned to the possibility that his image could be exploited for political ends that he refused while archbishop of Buenos Aires to offer communion at Mass to the rank and file, since it could be seen as an endorsement of the recipient.

Hours after the attacks, President Michelle Bachelet said, "I also want to invite you all to experience this visit in a climate of respect, solidarity and happiness".

According to CNN, protests were expected with the arrival of the pope, majority "about the sexual scandal" surrounding Fernando Karadima - a Chilean priest convicted in 2011 for sexually abusing children- as well as about 80 other priests who have been accused of the same crime.

But critics in Chile say he failed to respond to their request to review the appointment of Juan Barros as bishop of Osorno.

Then, in 2010, it was was plunged into crisis when evidence emerged that it covered up for a prominent and powerful priest, something of a father figure for the Chilean elite, who had sexually abused minors in his high-class Santiago parish over decades.

Fifty-nine percent of Chilean citizens described themselves as Roman Catholic in a recent survey conducted by the consultancy group LatinobarĂ³metro.

Pope Francis is well aware of the challenges that await him in Chile and Peru.

However, Espinoza, who also appreciated Pope Francis' statements, noted that he expects more actions by the Vatican. He is waiting in line to deliver the lifeless body to authorities for cremation. Some people sang religious songs.

Francis, a keen defender of the rights of migrants, was addressing a congregation including migrants and refugees from some 50 countries, whose flags festooned the area around the altar in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.

Francis frequently visits detention centers on his foreign trips, part of his ministry to society's most peripheral.

One of the inmates chosen to speak for all, Janeth Zurita Interna, said she wanted to publicly apologize for her crimes and ask for mercy for the children who are growing up in prison with their mothers. "We are all very proud of him".

On Wednesday, Pope Francis will visit Temuco, a city in southern Chile that acts as the de facto capital for the indigenous Mapuche people.

Francis arrived in Chile on Monday evening and will continue to Peru later in the week.

Francis's reception in Santiago has been much more low-key than he is used to.

On Thursday, Francis travels to Peru where he also hopes to champion the rights of indigenous people and the need to protect the Amazon. The vehicle traveled from the airport through the streets of the capital in a convoy of white SUVs as tens of thousands of well-wishers, many waving Vatican and Chilean flags, lined the streets.
