Abbas calls Trump's peace efforts 'slap of the century'

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday blamed Israel for ruining the ongoing Oslo Accords and said President Donald Trump's handling of the peace talks was a "slap in the face" to Palestinians.

Abbas also said Israel had "ended" the landmark Oslo peace accords of the 1990s with its actions, while branding the U.S. ambassadors to the United Nations and to Israel, Nikki Haley and David Friedman, a "disgrace".

Beyond that, Abbas attacked the U.S. ambassadors to Israel and the United Nations, David Friedman and Nikki Haley, calling them a "disgrace".

"Israel ended Oslo", Abbas said, adding that the meeting must take decisions on how to move forward.

The meeting in Ramallah of the Palestinian Central Council - a high-ranking arm of the Palestine Liberation Organisation - was called in the wake of Trump's December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"Politically, Jerusalem is our capital; in our religion, it is our capital; geographically, it is our capital", said Abbas.

"We said "no" to Trump, "we will not accept your project", the Palestinian president said.

Naturally, nobody on the internet waited for the facts, and I was pretty much the only person in the universe defending Wahlberg. Hollywood is outraged at the pay disparity, with many taking to social media to voice their fury.

Trump's Jerusalem decision also prompted Abbas and the PLO to reject any role for the United States in future peace efforts.

"Now we say "No" to Trump, we won't accept his plan - we say the "deal of the century" is the slap of the century", noted Abbas, referring to the USA president's pledge to achieve the "ultimate deal" - peace in the Middle East.

Palestine's official WAFA news agency reported that the Committee convened in Ramallah ahead of a central council meeting of the PLO on Sunday.

Trump said in a Twitter message last week that the USA gives the Palestinians hundreds of millions of dollars each year and gets "no respect or appreciation".

The 121-member council will meet Monday to discuss strategy for responding to Trump's announcement, but Abbas offered few concrete policy proposals.

Even so, Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
