Ibuprofen Linked to Men's Fertility Problems

Ibuprofen Linked to Men's Fertility Problems

Of the group of men ages 18 through 35, 14 of them were given 600 milligrams twice a day. But a new study raises questions about the risks of frequent usage of ibuprofen by young men.

The Danish research team warned: "Ibuprofen appears to be the preferred pharmaceutical analgesic for long-term chronic pain and arthritis". The men were then divided into two groups, 14 in an ibuprofen group and 17 in a placebo group.

Young men taking ibuprofen saw a coordination between luteinizing hormones (LH) - those that produce testosterone - and the level of ibuprofen in their bloodstream.

Even though this was a small study and further research is needed, the findings are important because ibuprofen is one of the most widely-used medications, Erma Drobnis, an associate professional practice professor of reproductive medicine and fertility at the University of Missouri, Columbia, told CNN.

Those who took the ibuprofen were more likely to have indications of testicular problems - including a condition called compensated hypogonadism that affects reproductive health - meaning men are less likely to be able to father a child.

Common brands of ibuprofen include Advil and Motrin.

He was the joint top scorer in the final round of WC qualifiers. "We always enjoy to play alongside [each other]". He has scored 24 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season.

Previous research by the team, which focused on pregnant women, had found that the use of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen during pregnancy affected the testicles of male babies. Before he stepped down in November 2016 he asked players about their use of over-the-counter painkillers and found that almost half of those who played in the past three World Cups took anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, every day. The study shows that ibuprofen use results in selective transcriptional repression of endocrine cells in the human testis.

The condition, known as testosterone deficiency, is a failure of the testes to produce the male sex hormone testosterone, sperm or both.

"These are the first-ever results to show a link between ibuprofen and fertility", Bernard Jegou, a senior scientist at the French Medical Research Council and the school of public health at the Research Institute for Environmental and Occupational Health in France, who coordinated the study, told The Telegraph.

The hormonal imbalance caused compensated hypogonadism, which is a condition linked to decreased male fertility, depression, and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

"Long-term use of ibuprofen has other negative effects on overall health so people should only be taking it over a period of weeks, months or years if a doctor has prescribed it".
