Irish Beat LSU, Win 10th Game

Irish Beat LSU, Win 10th Game

The victory ended Notre Dame's nine-game losing streak in January games and enabled the Irish to post their second 10-win season in three years, and only their third in the last 11.

There were plenty of question marks heading into the game against the LSU Tigers and the biggest was arguably at the quarterback position.

Trailing 14-6 early in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame drove 75 yards in 10 plays and scored its first touchdown of the game on a third-and-goal, 6-yard touchdown pass from Book to wide receiver Michael Young with 7:49 to go in the game.

Top Moment: The game's first touchdown came with 11:37 left in the quarter on a 20-yard middle screen from LSU quarterback Danny Etling to Derrius Guice on third-and-five. They missed two field goals and muffed two punts (yet managed to recover them). Jack Gonsoulin's extra point was good for a 7-3 lead with 11:37 to go in the third quarter. Zach Von Rosenberg's punt hit an Irish player for a fumble, and LSU snapper Blake Ferguson recovered at the Notre Dame 43-yard line.

It was a defensive struggle for the majority of the contest, with the Tigers entering the fourth quarter with just a 7-6 lead.

After a Yoon 49-yard field goal brought Notre Dame within one, Guice extended the lead to 14-6 less than four minutes into the fourth on a 2-yard pass from Etling. The drive was set up with a 35-yard pass from junior starting quarterback Brandon Wimbush to classmate Equanimeous St. Brown on the first play.

Notre Dame got on the board first when Justin Yoon made a 46-yard field goal with four seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Stats: Through three quarter, LSU had 276 yards on 50 plays while Notre Dame had 222 yards total offense on 48 plays. Book completed 14 of 19 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Four plays later, after back-back sacks, Book's 21-yard run on third-and-19 gives the Irish a first down at its 47. The Tigers drove 75 yards in 12 plays for the score.
