Reformist member of Parliament Mahmoud Sadeghi tweeted his support for the people: "The people's protests in Mashhad and other cities are in fact an outcry against the confusion and shortcomings that exist in the top layers of the country".

IRNA quoted the governor of the northeastern city of Mashhad, Mohammad Rahim Norouzian, as saying the gathering was illegal.

"I don't know who the main organizer was but the announcements started appearing last night [December 27] on Telegram network channels related to Neishabour", said the eyewitness, who requested anonymity for security reasons. "But towards the end, baton-wielding police attacked the crowd from both sides of the street and arrested some people".

A senior government official has accused the opponents of President Hassan Rouhani's administration of being involved in organizing a recent protest in the city of Mahshad.

Images sent to CHRI and postings on social media show people in other cities in Khorasan Razavi Province, including Neishabour and Kashmar, shouting slogans including, "death to high prices", "death to the dictator", and "Death to Rouhani".

Slogans have been chanted against not just Mr Rouhani but Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and clerical rule in general.

Political rallies are rare in Iran, but demonstrations are often held over economic issues such as layoffs, nonpayment of salaries, and price hikes.

We are a young team and when you are not winning you lose confidence, so we have to keep working this way. "They're giving everything, but we are where we are and we have what we have".

"Greetings to the heroic citizens of Kermanshah, who rose up with the slogan of either death or freedom, death to Rouhani, death for the dictator, protesting against high prices, poverty and corruption", Iranian opposition leader Mariam Rajavi said in a tweet.

Some footage in social media, showed police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse demonstrators, but it could not be verified. At least 100 protesters were arrested in Mashhad. "Forget Syria, think of us" read the protesters' banners.

"Those who are behind such events will burn their own fingers".

Mashhad was among the areas hardest hit by the closure of Mizan, which had around one million accounts, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Rouhani's signature achievement, a deal in 2015 with world powers to curb Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting most worldwide sanctions, has yet to bring the broad economic benefits the government says are coming.

Unemployment stood at 12.4 percent in this fiscal year, according to the Statistical Centre of Iran, up 1.4 percent from the previous year.
