Ice could make travel unsafe on New Year's weekend

Ice could make travel unsafe on New Year's weekend

Light rain and drizzle will continue for a few hours this morning, and northern areas of Acadiana are getting closer to the freezing point.

Any rain that is around on Sunday will likely transition into a wintry mix of freezing rain or snow by Sunday afternoon/evening. So some freezing rain is possible for a few hours along and north of U.S. 190. But this is such a small chance that I would get to excited about it, and little to no accumulation is expected. New Years Eve and New Years Day will be rather cold with low temperatures in the teens.

The clouds will return overnight and into Friday with temperatures dropping into the upper 10s by Friday morning, then rebounding into the middle 30s Friday afternoon.

Saturday will be the warmest day for the near term. With temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s, travel problems could develop. Freezing temperatures are likely from I-10 northward. Mostly sunny skies will stick around through the first half of the work week. Expect highs to reach the mid 50s. Temperatures for Tuesday are expected to range from 20 degrees to 31.

Very Cold Day Ahead For Green Country

In Atlanta and Chicago, it will be the coldest New Year's Eve since welcoming in 2010, when the temperature bottomed out at 29 and 5 F, respectively.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Patricia Sanchez said temperatures will range from a low of 21 to a high of 36 on New Year's Day. Once again, the GFS has been the wetter solution, while the European has been drier, but it still shows some moisture in place.

The three P's - plants, pipes, and pets - will need a fourth P - protection - over the New Year's weekend, and beyond. There's some uncertainty about Tuesday with some models indicating some winter precip along the Gulf Coast.
