Residents have options for Christmas tree disposal

Trying to figure out what to do with leftover Christmas Trees?

The City of Grand Island Utility Line Division will be recycling Christmas trees starting Wednesday and continue through Monday, Jan. 8.

Officials say the submerged trees act as fish attractors and improve fishing habitat.

People who pay for city water and trash pickup can put their trees out by the curb for Republic Services to take with their normal trash pickup from Tuesday through January 12.

"Real Christmas trees are biodegradable and we are able to recycle them into mulch or compost", said Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman.

Now that the presents are unwrapped and the cookies eaten, it's time to get rid of the Christmas tree.

Township residents should remove all lights and decoration before bringing trees to Township Park.

Residents can also take trees to the East Richmond Road Convenience Center at 3800 East Richmond Road; Hopkins Road Transfer Station at 3520 North Hopkins Road; and the open area behind RVA Financial Credit Union on Robin Hood Road.
