Benitez hits latest rut as Newcastle fall into drop-zone

"They're giving everything, but we are where we are and we have what we have".

The United boss happy with what he saw from his players against a side that had won 12 of their last 13 Premier League home matches.

The defeat, which was courtesy of a stunning Mesut Ozil volley, leaves Newcastle in the relegation zone and the prospect of Championship football next season could be a real possibility. "It was just talking about ideas", Benítez said.

"We did well in defence against a team with pace and quality".

Asked if he would celebrate Christmas with his staff, manager Rafael Benitez said: "Normally we will not do it, and the players have also chose to cancel their Christmas party because they have taken responsibility and they think it's important to focus on football".

"But they have chose to do this and I think that's very positive".

Dwight Gayle of Newcastle United celebrates after scoring his sides first goal with Mohamed Diame of Newcastle United during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Newcastle United

"We've seen it with Everton, West Ham and Crystal Palace".

"We need to carry on with the good performances, stay strong at the back and not concede". I think it's the right thing. We are a young team and when you are not winning you lose confidence, so we have to keep working this way.

Benitez is prepared to take "risks" in the transfer market.

Naturally we are all desperate that this happens, no matter who owns the club, but Newcastle play West Ham, Brighton and Stoke by the close of New Year's Day and even Swansea on Saturday 13 January would be maybe too early for any new signings to be properly integrated, even if they are brought in as soon as the transfer window opens. Against West Ham, they took 22 shots and scored none.

There could also be movement out of the club, though striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, keen to play week in, week out before heading to the World Cup with Serbia, will not be sold unless a replacement is secured. At the moment, if you don't have any players coming you can't sell anyone.
