United Kingdom 'close to Irish border solution' post-Brexit

A spokeswoman said: "As we leave the European Union, we are working hard to secure the best possible deal for our fishermen - one that will protect our strong ties with Ireland while allowing our coastal communities to thrive".

President of the European Council Donald Tusk signs a guest book in the office of Prime Minister (Taoisaech) of Ireland Leo Varadkar at Government buildings in Dublin, Ireland, December 1, 2017. "In the end, people are going to have to make a choice because if we're not in the Customs Union and the Single Market and heaven-forbid we don't get a trade deal, then that border will become the external border of the 27 EU member states with a third country which is what the United Kingdom will be", he said.

Clearly, Ireland wants the post-Brexit arrangement to be as close the the status quo as possible, with no border infrastructure in particular.

"But I believe with the right engagement and political will we can reach an agreement on the way ahead", he added.

But British Prime Minister Theresa May's room to offer additional concessions to Dublin appeared extremely limited as the Northern Ireland party propping up her government hinted it might withdraw its support if she gives too much.

The prospect of a deal will raise hopes Theresa May can secure trade talks next month

Tusk told Varadkar that the bloc is "fully behind you and your request that there should be no hard border".

With significant progress on the financial settlement and citizen rights, a deal on the Irish border would pave the way for Brussels to offer British Prime Minister Theresa May a transition deal as early as January.

London's proposal would allow "Regulatory Convergence" or the adoption of European Union industry standards by Northern Ireland to continue in an attempt to minimize the disruption of trade between it and the Republic of Ireland.

The issue is a major sticking point in the negotiations and must be dealt with before trade talks can begin.
