UCLA finalizing deal with Chip Kelly

UCLA finalizing deal with Chip Kelly

Florida has been in talks with former OR coach Chip Kelly, and met with him at his home in New Hampshire on Sunday, but are prepared to look for other options if Kelly chooses to take the open UCLA job.

Kelly was originally thought to be headed to Florida, but the school was no longer interested and was preparing to pursue other candidates, Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports reported. "I am thrilled to welcome Chip Kelly to Westwood", UCLA AD Dan Guerrero said.

The UCLA football program now has a new head coach less than a week after former coach Jim Mora was sacked. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

A deal appears to be Bruin between Chip Kelly and UCLA. Kelly finished with a 46-7 record at Oregon.

Kelly left OR for the National Football League shortly before NCAA sanctions were handed down. Kelly also was handed an 18-month show-cause penalty, which expired in late 2014.

The native of Dover, NH left for the Eagles in 2013 and won the NFC East in his first season, but failed to replicate his early success and missed the playoffs in the next two seasons and was dismissed.

The 49ers now owe Kelly approximately $15 million, sources told ESPN's Darren Rovell.

The decision by Kelly to move away from the Gators potentially clears him to focus attention on the opening at UCLA. Mora was midway through his sixth season with the program.
