Militant attack at Arish mosque, 75 Injured

Militant attack at Arish mosque, 75 Injured

On Friday, militants in four vehicles drove up to the Rawda mosque, set off an improvised explosive device outside the building and opened fire on people praying inside, according to a senior official in the north Sinai security directorate who asked not to be named.

They have also targeted followers of the mystical Sufi branch of Sunni Islam as well as Christians.

The extremists launched an attack on the al-Rawdah mosque in the town of Bir al-Abd, some 25 miles from the North Sinai provincial capital of el-Arish, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported. The attackers also fired upon the ambulances, eye witnesses claimed.

El-Sisi called a meeting of the security committee, state-run television said.

He said the terrorists killed innocent people, did not distinguish between children, youth or elders, and the attack was a war crime.

But this was the first major militant attack on a Muslim mosque, and it eclipsed any past attacks of its kind, even dating back to a previous Islamic militant insurgency in the 1990s.

Other reports have said that further east, the Arish-Rafah road has been closed, according to Al Jazeera.

Speaking to Masriya TV station, Egyptian health ministry spokesman Khalid Mujahid described the incident as a "terrorist attack".

In October 31 2015 ISIL-SP destroyed a Russian plane carrying 224 passengers, all of whom perished in the explosion.

The Sinai branch is one of Islamic State's surviving branches following the collapse of its self-declared caliphate in Syria and Iraq after military defeats by US -backed forces.

On Twitter, President Donald Trump also condemned the attack, calling it "horrible and cowardly". The mosque attack, however, marks a major escalation in the conflict. "My honest condolences to all those affected by such a barbaric act".

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani tweeted: "Heartbreaking loss of life in the cowardly massacre that took place in Egypt. Acts of barbarism and hatred in the name of God are acts against God himself".

"We stand with Egyptians in their war against terrorism and against anyone who tries to harm the Egyptian national security", Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement.
