N.Korea slams United States over terror sponsor designation

The North Koreans said President Trump's decision to put North Korea back on a list of states that sponsor terrorism is a "serious provocation".

New sanctions meted out by the United States government Tuesday targeted one Chinese individual, 13 entities in China and North Korea, and 20 vessels owned by North Korean shipping companies.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the latest sanctions shows "we are steadfast in our determination to maximize economic pressure to isolate it from outside sources of trade and revenue". But the unilateral measures, analysts said, only prevent US companies and banks from doing business with those sanctioned, which was already happening in practice.

New U.S. sanctions announced Tuesday against North Korea may add some substance to the symbolism, but only if China - which accounts for nearly all of North Korea's trade - decides to help. The sanctions against North Korean vessels were intended to deprive the North of the means to conduct worldwide trade on which the country depends.

North Korea condemned its USA terror listing as a "serious provocation" on Wednesday, warning that sanctions would never force it to abandon its nuclear weapons programme.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. had expressed its willingness to negotiate with North Korea but had yet to receive a response from the North. It is very unusual for a North Korean leader to shun a top envoy from China. The U.S. president called North Korea a "murderous regime", a sentiment he repeated this week. He added to this campaign for worldwide support in a telephone conversation Tuesday with Russia's President Vladimir Putin, seeking to enlist his support for heightened pressure against the North.

But North Korea is unlikely to give in to the sanctions and come back to the negotiation table anytime soon.

European researchers say they have identified the targets North Korea is planning to attack.

This continues a trend in which US-North Korea relations appear to send a lot of mixed messages.

Trump warned that the terror designation and sanctions announcement would be part of a series of moves over the next two weeks to reinforce his "maximum pressure campaign" against Kim Jong-Un's regime.

The US removed North Korea from its list in 2008 in a move to try and promote dialogue over its weapons programmes.
