Trump Is Ending Protection Status For Haitians Displaced By 2010 natural disaster

A Trump administration official said the delay also provides time for Congress to seek another legal avenue for Haitians nationals to remain.

Ms Duke chose to terminate the special status after a USA review of the conditions in Haiti found the country had made considerable progress, a senior official with President Donald Trump's administration told a briefing.

Duke, in her statement, said that she met recently in Washington with Haiti's foreign minister and the Haitian ambassador to the United States, and consulted other US government agencies.

Vaughan said it is hard to believe an acting secretary would make such an important decision without input from the White House.

"It really undermines their credibility on immigration policy in general", she said.

The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) programme grants temporary visas to more than 435,000 people from 10 countries ravaged by natural disasters or war. Individuals who are already in the United States from the designated countries are eligible and are then protected from deportation.

Haitians who have been in the United States under TPS have played a significant role in rebuilding their country.

Successive administrations have regularly renewed their status, and many have USA -born children.

Butch Jones ousted at Tennessee
Dooley, Johnny Majors, Doug Dickey and Bowden Wyatt are the only Tennessee coaches to endure one-win conference campaigns. With Jones" axing, Tennessee said it will now conduct an "exhaustive search' to look for its fifth coach in 11 years.

Sister Marie-Judith Dupuy of Sisters of Saint Anne immigrated to the US from Haiti and is now a citizen. The quake in 2010 killed more than 300,000 people, disrupted the function of civil society in Haiti, displacing families from their homes, closing schools and social service agencies, creating instability in government, and undermining the economy.

In July this year, more than 3,100 people were arrested after they crossed the border illegally to file refugee claims, up from 884 in June, the Canadian Government said.

He added that Duke also solicited input from the congressional delegation in Florida, which has a large number of Haitian TPS beneficiaries.

Supporters of the TPS program criticized the decision to end it al all.

The Haitians-as Marco Rubio explained in a pointed op-ed in The Miami Herald-are being sent back to a devastated country that is in no way prepared to take them in. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, D, hosted a meeting last week with Duke to which all members of the state's congressional delegation were invited. "This decision today by DHS is unconscionable". As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I continue to strongly support US initiatives that promote good governance and security, combat poverty and health epidemics, and advance economic opportunities for the people of Haiti.

TPS for Honduras and Nicaragua are now set to expire on January 5. Now they have until 2019 to make other plans. An official said beneficiaries will revert to their previous immigration status after that time. El Salvador's designation expires in March 2018.

"Our immigrant communities deserve the chance to live, study, and work in the United States without constant fear of deportation", said Assembly Member Felix W. Ortiz, Assistant Speaker. For instance, he said, the US government has spent more than $100 million to combat a cholera outbreak in the Caribbean nation. Here is what you need to know about TPS. "Those efforts will continue", he said. They work. They pay every tax except the federal income tax. The Trump administration earlier this year, however, ended it for citizens of Sudan and said it would end the program for Nicaraguans.

Moreover, the Executive Branch has appropriately extended the TPS designation because of the extraordinarily hard living conditions that persist in Haiti and the Haitian government's temporary inability to absorb thousands of people back into the population.
