Arabs prepare for Iran Security Council face-off

Arabs prepare for Iran Security Council face-off

The foreign ministers of the four Arab states met in the Egyptian capital Sunday ahead of an Arab League meeting later in the day.

Addressing the Arab foreign ministers' meeting, Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said: "Showing leniency toward Iran will not leave any Arab capital safe from those ballistic missiles".

The Arab foreign ministers' final statement referred to Hezbollah as a "terrorist organization", a branding that drew reservations from Lebanon, according to the head of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul Gheit.

The Arab ministers Sunday called the firing of the missile an "aggression" against Saudi Arabia and a "threat to the Arab and global security".

Regional tensions have escalated in recent weeks between Riyadh and Tehran over Mr Hariri's resignation and after a ballistic missile was sacked at the kingdom by Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are also backed by Iran.

Hezballah is part of the coalition government in Lebanese government.

Syrian state media have not yet confirmed the capture of Albu Kamal. Boukamal is the last town controlled by IS in Syria and Iraq.

The ministers also announced their full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and expressed support for measures taken by the kingdom to protect its national security, while warning Iran of its continued interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the region. "This is an unacceptable Iranian message", he added.

Both Iraq and Lebanon were represented at the meeting by senior diplomats, not their foreign ministers. Instead Antoine Azzam, country's representative to the Arab League participated in the foreign ministers' meeting. He alleged, "Iranian threats have gone beyond all limits and pushed the region into a unsafe abyss".

Speaking before Al-Jubeir at the 20-minute session broadcast live, Aboul-Gheit, the Arab league chief, was just as critical of Iran as the Saudi minister.

According to the members of the panel, the tightening of Yemen's blockade by the Saudi-led coalition and the invocation by Saudi Arabia of paragraph 14 of resolution 2216, which allows United Nations member states to take measures to prevent the transfer of military goods to Houthis, is allegedly an attempt to impede the delivery of humanitarian aid to Yemeni civilians. The Syrian government, backed by Russian Federation and Iran, was replaced by the pro-rebel Syrian National Coalition in the Arab League in 2013, but the Syrian seat was again vacated in 2014. Many Lebanese, including President Michel Aoun and Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, have said they believe Hariri resigned under Saudi pressure. These groups were allegedly supported by Saudi Arabia, US and Israel. Syria and Iraq have been alleging these countries for their hand-in-glove role in spreading terrorism in the region.

He further says, "The Arab world is divided and a lot of countries convened to Cairo today don't see eye to eye with Saudi Arabia on its ways and means or how it plans to confront Iran in the region".
