France says Saudi coalition must boost aid efforts to Yemen

The Saudi-led coalition hopes that will prevent "the smuggling of weapons, ammunitions, missile parts and cash that are regularly being supplied by Iran and Iranian accomplices to the Houthi rebels", the statement said.

Hedile noted the first flight carrying 218 passengers took off today.

The coalition shut down Yemen's sea and air ports as well as borders on November 6 in response to a missile attack by the Iran-backed Huthi rebels near Riyadh.

The humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged Yemen is now one of the deadliest in the world as starvation and lack of medical supplies leave millions at risk - the Saudi blockade of Yemen has added to the country's woes.

"The secretary-general is very much disappointed that we have not seen a lifting of the blockade", said United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric. "The Secretary-General and his humanitarian team are heartbroken at the scenes we're seeing from Yemen", Dujarric told reporters.

On Wednesday, UN officials said the government-controlled ports lacked the capacity required for the volumes of commercial and humanitarian cargo previously handled by Hudaydah and Saleef, and that supplies in the country were "running dangerously low".

For months, the United Nations has warned that the closure of Hodeidah would dramatically escalate the crisis.

Pressing the Government in the House of Lords, Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon said: "Even allowing for the fact of jihadist terrorism, is not the greatest threat to peace coming from the Middle East now the imminent danger of a conflict between the Sunnis and the Shias, led by Saudi Arabia and Tehran, in which the West is backing one side and Russian Federation the other?"

The number of new cholera cases has declined for the last eight weeks, Sherin Varkey, UNICEF deputy representative in Yemen, said in a telephone interview from Sanaa on Thursday.

Stephane Dujarric said Guterres welcomes the reopening of the port in the city of Aden but that this "will not meet the needs of 28 million Yemenis". "Some estimates say fuel will only last in the country for 20 days because of the blockade and challenges of getting fuel into the country", Varkey said.

"We make sure that any representations we make - including to the Saudis - on concerns we have, particularly about the conflict in Yemen, are made clear and at the highest level".
