Rupert Murdoch Called AT&T's CEO Twice About CNN Sale

Yesterday, reports surfaced that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had requested a sale of either Turner Broadcasting, which owns CNN, or DirecTV before it would approve AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner.

Per Recode, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he "didn't make that decision-it was made by a man who's a very respected person, a very, very respected person".

The head of the Justice Department's antitrust division, Makan Delrahim, said in a statement late on Thursday that he has "never been instructed by the White House" on the AT&T deal.

AT&T is preparing for a court battle if the Justice Department tries to prevent the $85.4 billion deal. But AT&T has said it doesn't want to lose the all-news network in the deal. Stephenson has said he has no interest in selling CNN. As a candidate, Donald Trump vowed to block the deal because it concentrated too much "power in the hands of too few".

White House: no sign of collusion in campaign aides' indictments
A Trump campaign supervisor encouraged Papadopoulos to make the trip "if it is feasible" on August 15, 2016. Trump or campaign officials in conspiring with Russian Federation to affect the outcome of the election.

A White House official said Kushner didn't intend for the comment to be taken seriously and was only trying to make a point, according to the Journal, which reported that the remark "wasn't taken lightly" inside Time Warner.

The DOJ's review process is supposed to be independent, though its about-face on the merger has struck even many Democrats who oppose a combined AT&T and Time Warner as suspicious. Then he added: "I do feel you should have as many news outlets as you can - especially since so many are fake". The companies had been planning to finalize the deal by the end of the year, and just last week AT&T said it was confident it would win approval for the deal since it does not involve direct competitors.

In an email provided by a DOJ spokeswoman, White House spokesman Raj Shah said that Trump "did not speak with the attorney general about this matter", and that "no White House official was authorized to speak with the Department of Justice on this matter". "But I do believe you should have as many news outlets as you can".
