England's Southgate has big calls to make

Loftus-Cheek was one of five players to be handed his debut at Wembley Stadium on Friday night, but the Crystal Palace loanee was given the man-of-the-match accolade after a promising performance against the world champions.

The Three Lions fielded an inexperienced eleven with three players making their maiden global appearances, Tammy Abraham joining Loftus-Cheek and Pickford, and totalling just 101 caps with only five players on 10 or more.

It's a long season and I still have to improve.

Southgate wants more former players to get involved with the national set-up and it has to be said, it seems like a good idea.

Loftus-Cheek was named Man of the Match for his performance from an attacking midfield position, growing into the role to produce an accomplished creative display. "I've settled in really well and they gave me a platform to go out and play".

"I think we did well".

"He has so many good attributes". Obviously against a well-oiled machine they will have periods in the game where they control possession but I didn't think they hurt us. I don't think the wider public will be as aware of him, you would have to have followed him very closely, but we believe in him and the others we played.

The 20-year-old has previously played for the Under-16s through to the Under-21s.

He said: "Loftus-Cheek is a player I've watched do that since U16 level, and despite his size and appearance and the way he plays, he's not hugely confident at times".

"It was a brilliant experience for our players and we've now got to see if we can try and replicate that against a side who rested a lot of their players today on Tuesday".

According to Henry Winter of The Times, Arsenal legend and former England global Ian Wright came into the dressing room before the game and handed the debutants their shirts, at Southgate's request.
