Brazilian F1 Grand Prix 2017 Qualifying: Saturday's Results, Times, Final Grid

Valtteri Bottas secured the third pole position of his career on Saturday after his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton had crashed in the opening minutes of an incident-filled qualifying session for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Mercedes, who have already clinched the 2017 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship, saw its drivers finish one-two here in both free practices ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season.

Though the championship is settled, Bottas has hopes of overtaking Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) for second place.

Times were a secondary concern for most teams in FP1, which sought to get in as much running as possible since rain was expected to roll in Friday afternoon, but the precipitation held off and FP2 unfolded on a dry track.

Hamilton wasn't hurt in the crash, it said.

"Even though he is a really, really good driver and very consistent, I also need to believe in myself".

The Rome Masters and Montreal Masters champion fell to Dutchman Robin Haase in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 second-round defeat. One year ago, for sure I never dreamed about being world number one again at the end of the season.

"The lap was fine [but] I knew I had a bit left".

"Obviously, Lewis was out in the beginning which was a shame for us but I'm happy that I could stand up for us".

Felipe Massa started his final home race weekend in good fashion for Williams to lead the midfielders in P7 as both McLarens made the top 10 with Stoffel Vandoorne in eighth and Fernando Alonso in P10. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow".

Bottas will start on pole for the third time in his career after edging out Vettel by only 0.038 seconds and the Finn is braced for a battle.

Vettel, who is 15 points ahead of third-placed Bottas in the title race, admitted he did not commit fully to his lap.

"It's always good to have a target, it makes you work harder and try harder".
