Nadal kicks off Paris quest with top rank

Rafael Nadal has finished the year as world number one in the ATP rankings after a 7-5, 6-3 win over Chung Hyeon in the Paris Masters.

Rafael Nadal is the year-end world No. 1 for the fourth time in his career. One year ago, for sure I never dreamed about being world number one again at the end of the season.

Speaking after victory on Wednesday, the Spaniard said: "I'm very, very happy for everything".

Roger Federer paved the way for his long-time rival to end 2017 top of the rankings after pulling out of the Paris Masters in order to rest ahead of the ATP Finals.

However, it wasn't plain sailing for Nadal against the 21-year-old Chung, who is due to feature at the inaugural NextGen ATP Finals in Milan next week. Means a lot, no?

'I'm happy to achieve the year-end world No. 1 here in Paris'.

The 36-year-old won his eighth title of the year at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, beating Juan Martin del Potro in three sets in the final to move to 96 singles titles. It's been an incredible year, ' he said after the match.

The young Korean had a break point for 6-5 but Nadal's serve helped him get out of trouble and he pulled away from a tiring Chung at the end to claim victory after an hour and 48 minutes.

Although Nadal has had an impressive year winning the French and US Open championships, he has yet to beat Federer, who won Wimbledon, in 2017.

The No 1 will next face Pablo Cuevas in the last 16, after the unseeded Uruguayan edged out Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-1) 6-2.

A raft of injuries had left many thinking that Nadal was a spent force at the end of past year, but he stormed back to prominence with a five-set final loss to Federer at the Australian Open.

But the 31-year-old Spaniard - who is also trying to balance the delicate political situation in his native country with his status as an global sportsman - refused to hype up his potential coronation.

The Rome Masters and Montreal Masters champion fell to Dutchman Robin Haase in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 second-round defeat.
