Pair of Car Bombs Rip Mogadishu

Pair of Car Bombs Rip Mogadishu

Twin vehicle bombs exploded outside a hotel in Mogadishu, killing at least 10 people in Somalia's capital Saturday, local officials said. No one has claimed responsibility for that attack.

The others hurled grenades and cut off the building's electricity as night fell. The dead also included a former politician, he said.

Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow, reporting from Nairobi, Kenya, said at least three heavily armed Al-Shabab gunmen have gained entry to the Nasa-Hablod hotel and that fighting was still going on.

Mohamed Dek Haji said he survived the bombing as he walked beside a parked vehicle that was largely destroyed by the explosion.

Bombs in Mogadishu two weeks ago killed at least 358 people, the worst such attacks in the country's history, igniting nationwide outrage.

"The Mujahedeen fighters are inside Nasa Hablod 2 hotel where... apostate officials are staying", said a brief statement posted on a pro-Shabaab website, quoting Andalus. He suffered small injuries on his shoulder and head from flying glass.

The event is technically still in progress as researchers continue to measure the incoming gravitational waves here on Earth. Instead, the objects were estimated to be around 1.1 and 1.6 times the mass of the sun, in the mass range of neutron stars.

That attack also began when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden auto outside the hotel which was then stormed by gunmen, provoking an assault that lasted several hours and only ended when special forces killed three attackers inside.

Its sister hotel, the Nasahablod, was targeted by Al Shabab in a similar attack that killed 11 people in June previous year.

Security officials said Saturday's bomber had pretended his truck had broken down outside the gate.

Terror group Al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaeda, often targets high profile areas in the city.

A 22,000-strong multinational African Union force in Somalia is expected to withdraw its forces and hand over the country's security to the Somali military by the end of 2020.

The US military also has stepped up military efforts against al-Shabab this year in Somalia, carrying out almost 20 drone strikes.
