Tropical development likely in Cayman Islands

Tropical development likely in Cayman Islands

Tropical storm warnings have been posted in Cuba and the Bahamas.

Update 1:20 p.m.: The National Hurricane Center has increased the chances that a tropical disturbance southwest of Florida will become a depression or storm to 80 percent. If the disturbance becomes a tropical storm, it would be called "Philippe". The added wind shear will lessen the odds of tropical development.

Localized rainfall of 5-10 inches (128-250 mm) will raise the risk of flash flooding and mudslides on land areas in the northwestern Caribbean into Saturday.

No warnings are issued now for the United States, but South Florida should monitor the storm, the NHC release said.

Rain and showers associated with a northern cold front are just the beginning of wet weather rolling over the Cayman Islands this weekend.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge expecting third child in April
Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine have revealed that their third child is due in April next year. Either way, the new arrival will be fifth in line to throne, bumping uncle Prince Harry down to sixth.

Labeled on forecast models as Invest 93, the low pressure system will continue to move north toward the Yucatan Channel Friday Night, then curve to the northeast toward the Straits of Florida (the waters between Cuba and Key West) on Saturday. This is a hotbed of tropical origins that we'll be watching through the end of October and into November.

This season also included the first major hurricane to make a United States landfall since 2005, the highest rainfall in the United States produced by a tropical system, and the first time ten hurricanes formed in a row since 1893.

Odds are increasing for a tropical disturbance in the Caribbean to develop.

These cyclones typically move northeastward from the Caribbean or western Atlantic ahead of sweeping cold fronts from North America. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service advised that flooding may occur in low-lying areas.
