MSNBC political analyst Mark Halperin put on leave over sexual harassment claims

Mark Halperin is parting ways with NBC News, where he has been a political analyst for years, after the publication of a CNN report in which five women accused the Game Change author of sexual harassment.

"But Emily Miller, a former ABC employee who is now a reporter at One America News Network, retweeted the Halperin story on Thursday with the hashtag "#MeToo". They all have asked not to be named. The women said Halperin did not promise them anything in exchange for sex or threaten to retaliate if they did not submit to his advances. Now an analyst for NBC News and a frequent panelist on MSNBC's Morning Joe, the Game Change co-author previously served as political director at the rival broadcast network.

The co-author of the bestselling book "Game Change" told CNN Wednesday night that he's "deeply sorry" and is taking a "step back" from day-to-day work to deal with the situation.

Neither ABC nor NBC commented on the allegations.

The women who worked with Halperin and who spoke with CNN did not report to Halperin.

One woman who spoke to CNN said that Halperin "just kissed me and grabbed my boobs" when she was invited to his office at ABC News in the early 2000s.

CNN global correspondent Clarissa Ward, who also used to work at ABC, tweeted that Halperin's behavior was "an open secret" at the network.

Some of the women recounted tales where after rebuffing or fleeing their first incident of harassment, Halperin would continue to sexually pursue them. Halperin denies grabbing a woman's breasts and pressing his genitals against the three women.

Halperin has apologized for what he termed inappropriate behavior, and ABC said Thursday that no complaints were filed against him during his tenure, which ended more than a decade ago. "Halperin apologized for the pain his actions caused. we will be following this story as it develops. Given I was so young and new I wasn't sure if that was the sort of thing that was expected of you if you wanted something from a male figure in news".

Halperin co-hosted a political analysis show on Bloomberg TV, and produced and was featured in Showtime's The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth, which followed presidential candidates during their 2016 election campaigns.
