London drivers face £21.50 daily charge for most toxic vehicles

Starting Monday, most diesel and gas vehicles registered before 2006 - as well as some later models - will be subject to a £10 ($13) "T Charge" when entering central London between 7 a.m.to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The charge has been introduced in an effort to improve air quality in the capital, where legal pollution limits are regularly exceeded.

The measure in London is a step toward creating an "ultra low emission zone" in London in 2020.

He said he is taking "urgent action to help clean up London's lethal air".

The pollution is having a significant impact on human health, with a major Lancet study revealing last week that nearly 50,000 deaths in the United Kingdom past year can be attributed to the country's toxic air.

Nadal equals Agassi record with win in Shanghai
In the quarterfinals, Nadal will play sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who got past Sam Querrey of the US 6-3, 7-6 (3). Dimitrov, at 2-2 in the decisive set, had Nadal's back to the wall and forced the Spaniard to survive a break point.

Mr Khan said: "Since we announced the T-Charge, the amount of the most polluting vehicles coming into the heart of London has fallen by 15% so we're really seeing a change in behaviour and that's what the T-Charge is about". This could mean some owners paying a combined 21.50 pounds a day to drive an area which covers all of central London - to the south of King's Cross station, to the east of Hyde Park, west of the Tower of London and north of Elephant and Castle.

The new "T-charge" applies to both diesel and gasoline vehicles that do not meet the Euro 4 emission standards outlined by the European Commission.

The total daily levy can be reduced by £1 if drivers register to pay the congestion charge automatically.

Drivers of these cars will be expected to pay the charge every weekday between 7am and 6pm, with cameras around the capital used to enforce it.

Speaking to Sky News, Khan said: "We don't make a profit from the T-charge - it's costing us".
