(Hockey) Asia Cup: Malaysia draw South Korea to advance to final

India now have seven points from three games, while Pakistan are eliminated as they have one point.

MALAYSIA diced with danger for 59 minutes before holding South Korea to a famous 1-1 draw to advance into the Asia Cup final for the first time since 1982.

The second goal for Team India came in the 51st minute when Harmanpreet Singh converted the penalty corner with power, making no mistake to give a 2-0 lead over their arch-rivals.

"We not just need to win against India but we need to win with a big margin (at least 3 goals) so we make the Final by the virtue of goal difference".

Second-placed Malaysia took their points tally to four after playing out a 1-1 draw against South Korea, who collected three points in total.

Coming into the match against Pakistan, India, despite having four points, were not guaranteed of a place in the final.

In their last face-off, India won 3-1 against Pakistan.

India pip Pakistan in Asia Cup hockey
India conceded the first penalty corner of the match in the last minute of the quarter but Pakistan couldn't make the most of it. Now, India lies at the top of their Pool A which also features tournament hosts Bangladesh along with Japan and Pakistan.

With goals from Satbir, Harmanpreet, Lalit and Gurjant, India once again beat Pakistan and moved into the Asia Cup final. India won two successive penalty corners in the 48th and 49th minute, both of which were saved by Pakistan's Amjad Ali with some heroic saves to deny the Indians.

Malaysia, India and Pakistan have already qualified for the World Cup via the World League format.

India have scored some handsome field goals in the tournament, displaying what they are best known for, one-touch attacking hockey.

In 1985 and '89, Pakistan defeated their neighbours in the final.

"In the interests of competition fairness, it has been decided that both matches between the two countries will be played at the same neutral venue", the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said.

The win in Dhaka is India's 7th straight win against Pakistan. This goal by SV Sunil was also adjudged as the goal of the match. The two neighbouring states met one on one for the second time in the tournament.
