School named after Jefferson Davis to be renamed after Barack Obama

School named after Jefferson Davis to be renamed after Barack Obama

More than 130 public schools nationwide are named after Confederate leaders, largely in the South.

The school PTA took suggestions for a new name from parents, students and employees, Jefferson said. "They are very excited about the school being named for President Obama".

A Jackson elementary school will change its name from one that honors Confederate leader Jefferson Davis (left) to one that honors former President Barack Obama.

The school stakeholders of Davis Magnet IB in Jackson, Mississippi, voted earlier this month to change the school's name to Barack Obama Magnet IB. Such a ruling would result in state control of the schools, meaning that the board of trustees would not meet for a while, The Clarion-Ledger reports.

According to Janelle Jefferson, the Davis Magnet School PTA president, it's a change the Confederate president himself might have endorsed.

We haven't learned anything new", he told Omnisport. "In the end, it's crucial for English football to be at the World Cup ". However, amidst all the negativity, a simple fact cannot be ignored, England have qualified for FIFA's showpiece event.

"We really wanted to know what they thought", Jefferson said. Critics of the school names and statues say they are accolades to the region's racist past, while supporters assert they represent history and should be preserved.

The new name will not go into effect until the 2018-19 school year, but it is something to look forward to in the coming year! Students from each class at the school gave presentations on their favorite pick. It also states that a "facility named to honor a person shall not be renamed except for compelling reasons".

A breakdown of the school's 2017 enrollment show that 97% of the students are black. Thankfully, one school in Jackson, Mississippi is making progress.

"Even the kindergartners participated", she said. "Having a school where there was input from parents, teachers and students - along with the school board - it seems like a model for how these decisions should be approached across the country".

"I wholeheartedly agree with the name", said Board President Camille Simms.
