Fears of Bali volcano eruption spark exodus of 75000

Volcanologists say the past week's dramatic escalation in tremors indicates an eruption is more likely than not, but they can't say with certainty when it will happen.

More than 75,000 people have fled the surrounding area, and local officials say the volcano could erupt in "a matter of hours".

The Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said activity on Mount Agung remained high yesterday, recording 125 volcanic earthquakes between 12am and 6am.

Over 1,000 people died when Mount Agung last erupted in 1963.

Almost 300 people were all left injured, according to Indonesia's volcanology centre.

"In general the evacuation is going well, the logistics supply is sufficient for the evacuees' needs", Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the agency spokesman, said Thursday.

The volcano has been at its highest alert level since Friday, sparking the massive exodus of villagers.

Elsewhere in the Pacific, all 11,000 residents of the island of Ambae in Vanuatu were evacuated when the Manaro Voui volcano erupted last weekend.

Flights to and from Bali are continuing, with Denpasar Airport reporting stable passenger numbers despite the fears.

Nengah Bunter was among those who witnessed the disaster and has been evacuated amid fresh fears of an eruption. Life went on as normal when ash and gravel was falling on us, until the big lava came out and destroyed everything, ' said 82-year-old Gusti Ayu Wati.

'Back then we weren't evacuated until it got really unsafe.

Bali's primary visitor hubs are in the island's south, about 70km from Mount Agung.

"Mount Agung is entering a critical phase".

The mountain, which sits about 70 kilometers northeast of Kuta, is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

In the case of an eruption, Indonesia plans to divert flights headed for Bali to 10 other airports, including on nearby Lombok and the capital Jakarta.

On Wednesday, a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) aerial survey found "huge columns of smoke, ash and volcanic rocks billowing from the crater of an erupting volcano" on the island, according to a press release from the agency.
