Sunday Night Football Down in Week 3

Sunday Night Football Down in Week 3

NBC reports that National Football League ratings for their primetime Sunday night telecast were down significantly from past year according to a Reuters report. The pre-game show on CBS received its highest rating in seven years, while the network saw a four point surge across the board.

WHAT IT MEANS: In a world where TV viewing is increasingly fragmented and more people are watching on devices or saving programs until later, the majority of TV shows have smaller ratings than the year before.

We have never seen a week where more people were interested in National Football League television viewership.

BUT the game was also a blowout. Maybe more people are concerned about concussions.

These decisions come after President Trump's incendiary comments on Friday calling NFL players who kneel during the national anthem "SOB's" and saying they should be fired. With attention on players kneeling during the national anthem, it's led the NFL's media partners to air the various renditions from each stadium as this has become a huge national story.

However, in another reminder of the influence of the ex-Celebrity Apprentice host-turned-POTUS on the numbers, last year's comparable MNF matchup, Atlanta-New Orleans, was going head-to-head with the first Presidential debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton, which pushed MNF to an all-time low. Together, the pregame shows on CBS and Fox saw a 19 percent increase compared to past year. CBS' lineup Sunday included the Green Bay Packers' overtime win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"People are going to tune in for the match-ups, the stars and hometown teams", Berke said. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are still dealing with life without David Johnson leading their rushing attack for the time-being, and it'll be interesting to see if they can outdo Elliott in their own running game on Monday night.
