China bans LNG exports to the North

Trump ordered new sanctions on Thursday that opened the door wider to blacklisting people and entities doing business with North Korea.

China will limit refined oil exports to North Korea to 500,000 barrels for the period from next Sunday, October 1, to the end of the year, in compliance with the latest United Nations restrictive measures imposed on Pyongyang due to its sixth nuclear test earlier in September.

China accounts for around 90 per cent of North Korea's trade, so Beijing's cooperation is critical to any efforts to derail Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

The Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website that China would limit exports of refined petroleum products from 1 October.

The spokesman said the reports are different from the facts. North Korea will be feeling the pain of new United Nations' sanctions targeting some of its biggest remaining foreign revenue streams, like textiles, joint ventures and remittances from its legion of workers overseas.

China will suspend such exports once the total exports approaches the ceiling, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry said it would ban exports of condensate and liquefied natural gas to North Korea and limit textile imports from the North, starting 12 a.m. Saturday.

Textiles are one of North Korea's last major sources of foreign revenue following repeated rounds of United Nations sanctions under which Beijing cut off purchases of coal, iron ore, seafood and other goods. The sale of liquefied natural gas has been banned outright and the export of refined petroleum has been reduced to two barrels per year. Yet in early September, after North Korea conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test, it called the prospect of a full oil embargo "rash and extreme". Trump, speaking during the U.N. General Assembly, called Kim "Rocket Man", and Kim threatened in a video to "tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire".

On Friday, US President Donald Trump praised China for increasing financial restrictions, and has been pushing Beijing to apply more pressure to North Korea over it nuclear programme.

In July, Beijing and Moscow proposed a "double-freeze" plan, which would see North Korea suspend its missile launches and nuclear tests in exchange for a halt in joint US-South Korea military drills.
