Rohingya in India are illegal immigrants, not refugees, minister says

Lastly, any boat that somehow manages to land on Thai shores will be seized, and immigration officials will apprehend and put Rohingya men, women and children in indefinite detention.

On the humanitarian actions taken by Indian govt, Rajnath said, PM Modi had requested Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to accept returning Rohingyas.

New Delhi is already planning to deport as many as 40,000 Rohingya Muslims who are residing illegally in the country.

They also called discriminatory a 2015 government notification that did not include Muslims in a list of those who could enter India in fear of religious persecution in their countries.

As existing camps are already full with 300,000 Rohingya fleeing earlier violence, numerous Rohingya have been forced to live in the open air or under flimsy plastic sheets.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is himself a senior advocate, decried the "irresponsible" affidavit which claims India is not bound by global treaties.

Dozens of Burundian refugees killed in DR Congo
Burundi Foreign Minister Alain Aime Nyamitwe asked Congo and the United Nations on Twitter for an explanation of the shootings. A Burundian refugee told AFP: "I saw people falling down, men, women and children who were completely unarmed".

Fundamental right to reside and settle in any part of the country is available to citizens only; illegal refugees can not move the court to enforce the right. Thailand is obligated to allow them to enter the country and seek protection.

Many newly-arrived refugees are camping in the open or along roadsides, where they rush aid trucks for food and other desperately needed supplies.

The affidavit was filed in response to a petition against the deportation of Rohingya Muslims from India. Asserting that the presence of Rohingyas in India would be a drain on the resources of the country and would affect the rights of the people, the Centre on Monday pointed out that some of the Rohingyas had contacts with Pakistan-based terror outfits.

The petitioner have cited a Reuters report of August 14, 2017, as per which Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, told parliament that the Central government had directed state authorities to identify and deport illegal immigrants including Rohingya, who face persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. "Whatever decision is to be taken, it will be taken by the court", he told reporters on the side lines of a function here.

"India should not be behaving like the abusive Myanmar government", said HRW's South Asia director Meenakshi Ganguly. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's tweet endorsing the United Nations appeal to help Rohingyas along with a comment that "not all commoners are terrorists has raised hackles of the BJP leadership". There is a difference between commoners and terrorists. Most of these refugees have over the years obtained ration cards and voter identity cards and have become Indian citizens.

"I don't understand why Myanmar thinks we are outsiders or that we are from Bangladesh".
