However, shares of Reliance Industries (up 2.32 per cent), Larsen & Toubro (up 1.45 per cent), GAIL (up 0.93 per cent), Tata Steel (up 0.90 per cent), HDFC (up 0.73 per cent), Indiabulls Housing Finance (up 0.67 per cent), Tata Power (up 0.65 per cent) and YES Bank (up 0.64 per cent) were the gainers of the Nifty50 index.

The 50-share NSE Nifty closed at all-time high of 10,153.10, up 67.70 points, or 0.67 per cent after shuttling between 10,171.70 and 10,131.30.

The gauge had gained 610.64 points in the previous seven straight sessions.

The market breadth was negative as 1288 shares advanced, against a decline of 1311 shares, while 159 shares were unchanged.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained passive as they sold shares worth a net Rs 1,719.62 crore. During the day, it touched a high of 32,508.06. Tata Motors fell 1.98 per cent to Rs 415.50. "Ashok Leyland, Asian Granito, Bombay Dyeing, Centrum Capital, Hexaware Tech, IGL, Meghmani Organics, Punj Lloyd, Trident and Yes Bank, among others, were among those stocks", Desai told IANS.

Laggards included Coal India down 1.7 percent, Tata Motors fell 1.8 percent, Hero MotoCorp dropped 2 percent while Hindustan Unilever lost 1.1 percent.
